Welcome to your Arithmancy class! Arithmancy - which is also known as Numerology - is the study of the meanings of numbers, especially as they relate to your date of birth and to your name.

The two most important numbers in Arithmancy are your birth path number, also known as your life path or birthday number, and your birth name number, which is your destiny number.

Your birth path number, which gives you insight in how to fulfill your purpose in life, is taken from the month, day, and year in which you were born.

The first rule of Arithmancy is that every number is reduced to a single digit. So to find your birth path number, you add all the numbers in your birthday together... would anyone like to volunteer?

Ah, thank you, Miss Scriye. When is your birthday? ... Ah. Miss Scriye was born on September 09, 1984, so her calculations would look like this:

Month + Day + Year = Birth Path Number
9 (September) + 9 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 4 (1984) = 40 (9 + 9 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 4)

So the birth path number is 40. Does anyone see what's wrong with that number?

Yes, very good, Miss Granger. Each number must add up to one digit. So to reduce 40 to a single-digit number, add the two digits together: 4 + 0 = 4.

Before we get into the meanings of the numbers, let's discuss the formulation of the other number we mentioned: the birth name number. Your name, or destiny number, represents your purpose in life. Again, all numbers must be reduced to a single digit, with the exception of the master numbers: 11, 22, and 33.

Use this table to find the value of each letter. Remember, you must use your complete name: the name you were given at birth, and not a nickname. If you have a middle name, use that, too.

1 independent, pioneering, and headstrong; associated with Aries
A number 1 person has a purpose and is impatient for results! They meet challenges with courage and self-reliance, and usually with strong opinions. They are determined, they take the iniative, and they like to have their own way.
2 relationships, unity, diplomacy, love of peace; associated with Libra
Sensitive number 2s need to balance the forces in their lives, and they want harmony at all costs. They are the mediators, and they love to please: they are diplomatic, modest, and considerate.
3 humor, talent, creativity, enthusiasm, vivaciousness; associated with Leo and Sagittarius
Number 3s love creative expression, drama, writing, and speaking. Threes have a great ability to influence others with their words, expressiveness, and style. Their enthusiasm generally attracts friends for life.
4 stability, security, hard work; associated with Taurus
Number 4s are all about hard work and putting down roots - after all, life is serious to them, and needs order. Fours rule work, family, the home, and health; they follow the rules, are good managers, and are always economical.
5 magnetic, energetic, restless, curious; associated with Gemini
Number 5s live for change and freedom. Curious and adventurous, fives are interested in metaphysics and progressive thinking, and are always looking to be unrestricted and free from routine.
6 responsibility, duty, protection of the family; ruled by Cancer
Six is the number of the nurturer, and sixes rule the home and family. Six is also the number of deep love, as opposed to flirtatious love. Sixes are frequently natural-born teachers and counselors.
7 analytical, private, quiet, solitary; ruled by Virgo and Pisces
Sevens are introspective and usually searching for wisdom. They usually specialize in some area, and are generally sought out for their wisdom. They can be eccentric and loners, but they are also spiritual and wise.
8 ambition, money, business, achievement; ruled by Capricorn
Eight is the number of the expert and the authority. It's also the number of personal power and learning to be authentic. 8s are excellent organizers who want to be the boss, learning to use power responsibly.
9 endings, finishings, completion; ruled by Scorpio
Nine is the last number in numerology (1 - 9), and has the properties of all the numbers. 9s are intuitive, emotional, and compassionate, but they must learn how stay detached and rise again after feeling despair.

Besides these main numbers, there are also the master numbers. The master numbers you are likely to see are 11, 22, and 33.

11 ruled by Sagittarius
Number 11s are here to inspire, to help others achieve a higher purpose, and to shed light on other's troubles. They are intuitive and idealistic. 11s can be high-strung, fanatical, and in love with ideals; at the same time, they are insightful and filled with star quality.
22 ruled by Aquarius
22s are master builders who can see the whole picture, and who can take ideas and make them into reality. They mix innovation with practicality and spiritual wisom. Frequently, 22s become leaders with far-reaching influences; they are usually drawn to working on the corporate level, or on projects that influence everyone.
33 ruled by Pisces
33 is the number of healing and unconditional love - that is, love at its highest level. This number usually requires self-sacrifice, and 33s are often sensitive to the sacrifices of others. They teach through their profound love of others. 33s are known for inspiring compassion in others.
